C1770. A rare coloured plaster model after the classical Bacchus and Ariadne
The base has been forshortened from the original to fit on a mantle, so the left leg of Bacchus has been altered. I cannot find another classical sculpture in this pose. I think it comes from 18th century English portraiture. See Mr and Mrs Smith by Gainsborough or John Talbot by Pompeo Batoni.
